SUVs are now the most popular new car segment, with more and buyers making the switch to these high-riding models.

Their popularity makes them a popular choice for car manufacturers to electrify, with a growing number of battery-powered SUVs coming to the market. The choice is now huge, with plenty of mainstream and premium car firms now competing in this segment.

But what are the best options? Here we choose the best electric SUVs to suit a range of budgets.

BMW iX

BMW iX

BMW has more experience with electric cars than nearly all its fellow premium brands, and that really shows with the iX. It’s the German firm’s first bespoke electric SUV, and offers a stunning, futuristic interior and rewarding and enjoyable driving experience.

The iX’s bold design might be a bit ‘out there’ for some, but with its impressive performance and range of up to 380 miles, there’s not much else that you can find fault with.

Nissan Ariya

Nissan Ariya

Nissan was an early pioneer with electric cars with its ground-breaking Leaf, and now the brand is introducing a major follow-up EV – the Ariya. A stylish coupe-styled SUV, the Ariya’s interior is the real highlight as it feels a step above what we’re used to from Nissan.

There are two powertrain options on offer, though even the entry-level model can manage 250 miles on a charge, and 329 miles in the case of the larger 87kWh battery version.

Skoda Enyaq iV

Skoda Enyaq iV

Skoda is renowned for its practical and family-friendly models, and both of those attributes have been carried through to its EVs. The Enyaq iV is its first bespoke electric car, and excels with its vast interior space, classy design and good value for money.

Skoda has recently introduced a more glamorous Coupe version as well, while a range of up to 339 miles provides plenty of scope for long-distance journeys.

MG ZS EV

MG ZS EV

With a starting price of under £30,000, the ZS EV is excellent value for money and considerably cheaper than every other car on this list. While it might lack the premium badge and interior of other models, it’s hard to argue with the price, and also when you consider a seven-year warranty is included.

Standard equipment includes a range of driver assistance tech, 10.1-inch touchscreen and a digital driver display, while the ZS EV also packs a practical interior. Choose a ‘Long Range’ version and MG also claims a respectable 273 miles from a charge.

Ford Mustang Mach-E

Ford Mustang Mach-E

Ford’s first bespoke EV is a rather different proposition to other models here, with its sports car influence paying off with the way the Mustang Mach-E drives. With styling inspired by the legendary Mustang muscle car, Ford also offers a GT model that serves up 480bhp.

The Mach-E’s interior is a real step up too, with the Tesla-like interior giving the cabin a very modern feel. The Mustang Mach-E’s range of up to 379 miles is one of the longest of any electric SUV, too.

Hyundai IONIQ 5

Hyundai IONIQ 5

Hyundai is proving to be a real leader when it comes to EVs, and the IONIQ 5 is a fantastic example of this. Built around a bespoke electric car architecture, this is one of the fastest-charging electric cars on the market, with a charge from 10 to 80 per cent capacity taking just 36 minutes.

The IONIQ 5’s also deceivingly large in size, offering a huge amount of space inside and being packed full of technology. A range of up to 315 miles is also offered from the top version.

Tesla Model Y

Tesla Model Y

Tesla remains a force to be reckoned with in the electric car world, and its Model Y SUV is now one of the UK’s most popular new cars. Based on the Model 3, the Y is great to drive and can reach 0-60mph in just 3.5 seconds if you choose the Performance model.

You can also take full advantage of Tesla’s Supercharger network, while it offers a range of up to 331 miles in ‘Long Range’ form.

Kia EV6

Kia EV6

Kia’s EV6 is built around the same underpinnings as the Hyundai IONIQ 5, though it’s styled in a very different way, and doesn’t look as conventionally like an SUV. It’s already won a number of high-profile awards, too.

Offering a range of up to 328 miles, Kia also offers a flagship GT model that packs a dual-motor setup producing 577bhp, and enabling 0-60mph in just 3.3 seconds. A stand-out interior and Kia’s seven-year warranty are the cherries on top of the cake.

Volkswagen ID.5

Volkswagen ID.5

Volkswagen’s scaling up its range of EVs, and the ID.5 is one of its latest models. Essentially a coupe-styled version of the ID.4 SUV, it packs a sleeker look, yet still offers plenty of interior space, and doesn’t feel compromised in this respect.

With a range of up to 327 miles from its large battery, the ID.5 is ideal for electric car owners needing to do plenty of miles, while a 295bhp GTX will appeal to those wanting a sportier SUV.

Kia Niro EV

Kia Niro EV

Kia’s e-Niro has proven to be one of the UK’s most popular cars, and its appeal is only growing with the arrival of a second-generation model. Renamed ‘Niro EV’, it gets a much-improved interior that offers a more upmarket feel than its predecessor.

The exterior has also received a stylish makeover, while like before it comes with a practical interior and generous levels of standard equipment. It provides a range of up to 285 miles.
