You might consider Jeeps as big gas-guzzling models, but in recent years this American brand has set out to change that.
Introducing a range of electrified models to its line-up, Jeep will shortly only sell purely models that are either hybrid or all-electric. High up the priority list at the firm are PHEVs, which aim to bring the best of both worlds, with the latest model featuring this powertrain being the Compass 4xe. Here’s what you need to know about it.
There’s the promise of very low running costs
For the Compass’ powertrain, it pairs a 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and 11.4kWh battery. The key advantage to the latter is that it enables this Jeep to travel on electricity for up to 30 miles.
If you keep that battery charged up there’s scope for very low running costs, with Jeep claiming up to 156.3mpg, with CO2 emissions of 44g/km also giving the Compass very low rates of company car tax.
Strong performance
The other advantage to this powertrain is also the strong performance on offer, with this 4xe being by far the most powerful Compass model in the line-up.
The combination of petrol and electricity serves up 237bhp, and is able to accelerate from 0-60mph in a sprightly 7.3 seconds, which certainly gives this family SUV plenty of poke, should you need it.
Great off-roading ability
Jeeps are renowned for their off-roading ability, and the American brand has prioritised not losing that in an electrified era.
So the Compass 4xe – despite not being a true ‘off-roader’ on paper – comes as standard with four-wheel-drive from the hybrid system. Jeep also offers an extreme Trailhawk model that’s been engineered to be as rugged as possible. Featuring a rugged bodykit, it gets a host of mechanical updates, including a special Selec-Terrain traction control system, featuring a special ‘Rock’ mode to enhance its ability.
Cool styling
Jeep’s range of models are some of the most recognisable on the roads, with the brand successfully carrying over some historic styling traits onto its latest cars.
The Compass 4xe is no different, with its bold seven-slot grille making it unmissable as a Jeep. There are plenty of modern touches that have been introduced, though, such as full LED headlights, which are now slimmer than the units they replace.
Plenty of technology
Speaking of modern-day technology, this latest Compass comes seriously well equipped. Inside, there’s a new 10.25-inch touchscreen and digital instrument cluster, both of which really elevate this Jeep’s interior.
It’s also Jeep’s first model in Europe to offer level 2 autonomous driving capability, featuring technology like Highway Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control with lane centring.
The Jeep Compass 4xe is on sale now, with prices starting from £40,695.
