MG is a brand that continues to go from strength to strength, and with UK sales exceeding 50,000 in 2022 – MG registered more cars than the likes of Mini, Land Rover and Skoda, in fact – it’s one of the UK’s fastest growing car brands, at least where value is concerned.
A key draw to the brand has been its electric models – the ZS EV and the MG5 estate, the latter being one of the 10 most popular battery-powered cars in 2022. With MG recently updating it, here we look at why it makes an ideal electric family car.
One of the only electric estate cars on the market
With SUVs being all the rage, this is the area where manufacturers are increasingly focusing their attention, particularly when it comes to EVs. However, it has been deprived of other market segments, not least the estate car market.
It was the MG5 that arrived as one of the very first electric estate cars back in 2020, and even nearly three years later, it remains the only model at the affordable end of the spectrum as it’s only the Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo that’s the other model on the market in this category, though it’s substantially more expensive.
Practical interior
The other advantage to an estate car is that they’re usually quite practical, and the MG5 is no exception, making it a particularly attractive choice for families.
Though not the largest estate car on the market, it often has a great deal of space, with enough space for five occupants, with adults able to sit comfortably in the rear. The boot is also a great size, measuring 479 litres up to the load cover with the seats upright, or 1,367 litres once the rear seats are folded.
Good electric range
Considering the MG5’s attractively low price point, a key draw to the model is its good electric range. MG recently bolstered the model with the addition of a ‘Long Range’ derivative, which has now become the only version offered.
That’s great news, however, with the MG5 using a 57.4kWh (usable) battery that allows for a claimed range of 250 miles in the SE specification, or 235 miles with the top-spec Trophy. Hooked up to a 150kW public charger, it can take just 35 minutes for a 10 to 80 per cent charge to take place.
Generous equipment levels
The other great thing about MGs is the generous equipment levels on offer, with all models coming with a large 10.25-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with keyless entry, adaptive cruise control and vehicle-to-load charging that enables you to use the MG5’s battery to charge other electrical equipment using an extra cable.
If you upgrade to the Trophy model, you get even more equipment for the money, including leather-style upholstery, heated front seats, 17-inch alloy wheels and a handy 360-degree parking camera.
Great value for money
One area where MG continues to excel across the board is the value for money that its cars offer. The MG5 is no exception and is stunning value compared to smaller electric hatchbacks. Prices start from £30,995 for the SE model, which is less money than what you’d spend on a new Peugeot e-208
On top of that, you also get MG’s long seven-year warranty, which is one of the most comprehensive on the market, and far longer than the typical three years of cover you get from many other manufacturers.
