The electric car segment is growing at quite a rate, with customers now having a greater choice of models than ever.
While initially, it was predominantly compact hatchbacks and SUVs that manufacturers prioritised, an increasing number of executive saloon cars are being offered with an electric powertrain. Here we take a look at the best four-door EVs on the market today.
BMW i7
BMW’s 7 Series has long been regarded as one of the leading luxury saloons on the market, and the firm has recently taken the next step with the introduction of its electric i7.
Arriving to rival the Mercedes EQS, it offers an especially bold design and one of the best interiors of any car on sale. Loaded with technology and upmarket materials, rear passengers are also able to benefit from the optional ‘Theatre Screen’ – a huge 31-inch panoramic display that comes out of the headlining, and transforms the experience for those in the back seats. Boasting plenty of performance, a large battery also allows the i7 to travel for 387 miles on a single charge.
Tesla Model 3
If it wasn’t for Tesla, electric cars and their technology likely wouldn’t have progressed as much as they have, and there’s a lot to thank this American EV brand for. It’s the Model 3 that really helped to establish Tesla’s dominance, with this compact electric saloon now being one of the UK’s most popular cars.
The Model 3 offers an advanced tech-filled interior, while also offering particularly strong performance – the flagship version being able to accelerate from 0-60mph in just 3.1 seconds. It also offers a range of up to 374 miles, along with easy access to Tesla’s Supercharger network. Tesla has also recently slashed its cars’ pricing, with the Model 3 now starting from £42,995.
BMW i4
BMW now has one of the widest ranges of electric cars of any manufacturer, and another model worth checking out is the i4. Essentially an EV version of the excellent 4 Series Gran Coupe, it’s not explicitly a saloon because of its boot opening, but it is a lot like a four-door model in terms of its look.
Rivalling the Tesla Model 3, the i4 brings a more enjoyable driving experience and a higher-quality interior. It also boasts a fantastic electric range of up to 365 miles, while a sportier M50 version is also offered.
Citroen e-C4 X
If you want a more affordable electric saloon car, it’s worth taking a look at Citroen’s new e-C4 X. Essentially a four-door version of the C4 hatchback, it boasts a big boot and particular focus on comfort.
All e-C4 X’s come generously equipped as well, while a 222-mile electric range should prove plenty for many drivers. To add to its appeal, it’s also priced identically to the standard electric hatchback, with a £31,995 starting price being particularly attractive.
Polestar 2
The Polestar 2 is another model that’s not a ‘saloon’ by definition, because of its hatchback-like boot opening, but its design very much mirrors that of a four-door car. This Swedish EV is a particularly cool piece of design, with its SUV-like influence and cool lighting being standout elements.
The Polestar 2 is currently this Volvo-owned firm’s sole model and continues to grow in popularity. A recent update has only enhanced this EV further, with the model now able to travel up to a superb 394 miles on a single charge.
Mercedes EQE
Mercedes is another firm that’s quickly ramping up its line-up of EVs, and a particularly great choice is the EQE. Designed to serve as the electrical equivalent to the E-Class, it offers a smart design and high-end interior that’s packed full of the firm’s latest technology.
Essentially a slightly smaller of the flagship EQS, this EQE offers a fantastic electric range of up to 384 miles, while you can also choose a version that’s been developed by Mercedes’ AMG division.
Hyundai IONIQ 6
Hyundai has established itself as a key player in the electric car segment, and its recently expanded its line-up further with the new IONIQ 6. Nicknamed the ‘streamliner’, because of its particularly sleek shape, it offers a range of up to 338 miles, despite using a smaller battery than most other cars on this list.
The IONIQ 6 also offers especially cool styling to make it stand out on the road, as well as a high-tech interior filled with high-quality but sustainable materials. At £46,745, it is priced similarly to more premium models.
